Both Narita International Airport and Haneda Airport also provide baggage storage services, ATMs, and specialised assistance for passengers with specific needs.
Narita International Airport is located 70 km northeast of the city. Taxis are the most convenient way to get from the terminal into the city, with the journey taking approximately 40 minutes. There is also the Keisei Narita Skyaccess train, which departs directly from the airport and reaches Nihombashi Station, situated in the vibrant central Chuo City district, in around an hour.
For passengers arriving at Haneda Airport, the quickest way to downtown Tokyo is by taxi, which takes about 15 minutes. With an urban population of over 37 million people, Tokyo is the world’s largest city. It only makes sense for this sprawling metropolis to be filled with rich culture, a strong sense of heritage, and endless attractions for everyone.
Start your trip by heading to the Tokyo Skytree - a towering 634-metre-high observation deck that offers panoramic views across the city. From here, you can see the skyscrapers of the business districts as well as the quieter, sprawling residential areas.
A great way to familiarise yourself with Tokyo is to visit some of the most popular and well-known neighbourhoods that best exhibit the pulsating energy the city is known for. Both Harajuku and Shinjuku are great options where you’ll find neon-fuelled futurism, countless eateries, and a diverse range of shopping options. Meanwhile, districts like Yanesen are ideal for experiencing Tokyo’s calmer side, steeped in ancient traditions and heritage through its old town and various temples.
If you want to explore more of Tokyo’s heritage, we recommend visiting some of the ancient temples dotted around the city. Senso-ji and Meiji Jingu are among the most popular and are completely tranquil oases amongst the urbanised city sprawls. There are also some highly commended museums and galleries in Tokyo where you can learn more about the city’s history, cultural significance, and art scene. We recommend the Mori Art Museum and the Tokyo National Museum, in particular, for contemporary art and an expansive range of ancient artefacts, respectively.
For an unforgettable personal experience of Japan's tea culture, there’s nothing better than the Sakurai Tea Experience. Located in the Aoyama area, this is a great way to enjoy a modern take on traditional tea culture in Japan.
Those fortunate enough to travel to Tokyo in late March or early April will be able to witness the world famous cherry blossom season. The Japanese word “hanami” literally means to view these flowers, and some of the best places to do so are Ueno Park, Shinjuku Gyoen, and Yoyogi Park - although they can be found all over the city.
