Before proceeding into the heart of Shanghai, Pudong International Airport (PVG) and Hongqiao Airport (SHA) both provide a wide selection of services and amenities to meet their diverse needs. Experience delicious meals at a variety of eateries at the terminals of both airports and explore plenty of fashionable stores for casual shopping. In addition, both Narita and Haneda airports provide ATMs, baggage storage facilities, and additional services for passengers in need.
Choosing your airport in Shanghai
For passengers visiting during peak seasons, especially in the summer and autumn months, Pudong Airport offers a more tranquil experience when arriving or departing. These busy times are marked by numerous holidays and festivals, such as the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day, which can lead to larger crowds at Hongqiao Airport. As a result, passengers arriving at Pudong may encounter shorter wait times at check-in, security, and immigration, contributing to a more enjoyable travel experience.
If you're arriving or departing from Shanghai during the early morning hours, Hongqiao Airport might be a more convenient choice. Situated just about 25 minutes from downtown, it is ideal for those with early flights or those arriving late at night. Travellers staying in central Shanghai will benefit from the shorter travel time, allowing for additional rest before their trip.
Taxis are the most convenient way to get downtown from Pudong Airport, as it takes approximately 45 minutes. Alternatively, you can opt for Shanghai’s train services, which will take you to the heart of the city in around 35 minutes. The Airport Maglev is another viable option as it will transport you to various destinations in Shanghai in just under an hour.
If you’re arriving at Hongqiao Airport, taxis can take you downtown as quickly as 30 minutes. Trains are also another convenient option, as the Shanghai Metro Line 10 can take you to major stations such as Xujiahui and People’s Square in 30 minutes as well.
The Bund, often called a "gallery of international architecture," is a mandatory stop for anyone visiting Shanghai. This famous waterfront features 27 historical buildings, including the HSBC Building, The Peace Hotel, and The Customs House, in diverse styles such as Gothic, Baroque, and Art Deco. It's a fantastic spot for photos, offering a refreshing breeze and a powerful visual contrast between the historical feel of old Shanghai and the modern skyline. Visitors can enjoy the historical atmosphere during the day or the spectacular, illuminated light show after dark. To truly capture the best view of the evening skyline, a night cruise on the Huangpu River is highly recommended.
The Shanghai Natural History Museum (SNHM) offers an in-depth look at life's evolution and the natural world, housing over 290,000 specimens across five floors. Visitors are typically advised to begin on the second floor with the "Mysterious Beginnings" exhibit, which utilises 4D theatres to explore the origins of the universe and life. The journey continues on the first floor with "The River of Life," a remarkable display featuring animal specimens, fossils, and skeleton models, with a particular focus on dinosaurs and other massive ancient creatures. The tour concludes on the museum's lower levels. The basement is dedicated to exhibitions covering evolution, ecological diversity, and the Earth's geological history. This includes a collection of minerals and gemstones, alongside a special section detailing the natural history of Shanghai itself.

These areas are particularly notable for their narrow, winding alleys, which now house chic cafes, unique boutiques, art galleries, and diverse restaurants.
