Japan’s capital city of Tokyo is a sprawling metropolis made up of a patchwork of unique districts with attractions for all types of travellers. Plan a visit to the largest city in the world and take in all it has to offer with its fascinating blend of vibrant culture and modern technology.
Start your trip by heading to some of Tokyo’s world famous and dazzling neighbourhoods. From the neon-lit streets of Shinjuku to the ever-popular Shibuya crossing walked by over 2 million people each day. Apart from being great spots to snap memorable photos of your trip, these districts host an array of restaurants serving delectable Japanese fare, department stores, and more. If you want to get a better view of the city, head straight to Sumida where you can purchase tickets for the Tokyo Sky Tree. From atop the 634-metre-high observation deck, you’ll get a marvellous panoramic view of Tokyo extending as far as the eye can see.
Japan, and Tokyo in particular, has a reputation for its futuristic technology and robotics industries, along with an equally fascinating culture. We recommend paying a visit to some of the many traditional, ruby-hued temples and shrines dotted around the city, such as the 1,300-year-old Senso-ji, Meiji Jingu, and the Asakusa Shrine.
Tokyo also offers travellers plenty of picturesque gardens, including Ueno Onshi Park, Yoyogi Park, and Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden. If you are lucky enough to plan your trip to Tokyo around springtime (typically late March or early April), you will be able to witness the beautiful cherry blossoms in full bloom.
While there’s certainly no shortage of activities to do in Tokyo, the city is also a great starting point for a day trip. Consider making the journey to the nearby town of Hakone for its relaxing hot springs, or the historic city of Kamakura, which was the de facto capital of Japan from 1185 to 1333. Many travellers also decide to take the train to any number of nearby resorts or towns with spectacular views of Mount Fuji.
Explore hotels for all occasions when travelling from Tel Aviv to Tokyo with Cathay Pacific and enjoy a wondrous world of rewards, including special accommodation, room upgrades, and access to lounge facilities. Experience true hospitality and impressive sights of the Imperial Palace at the famed 5-star hotel, The Peninsula Tokyo.
Sinking your teeth into the diverse Japanese culinary scene is a great way to experience local culture. Foodies should be sure to try local favourites including sushi in Odaiba, ‘soba’ (buckwheat noodles) in Chiyoda, and ‘yakitori’ (skewered chicken) in Nakameguro. We also recommend heading to Fukagawa Kamasho, which serves one of the most traditional Japanese dishes called ‘fukagawa-meshi’ (a lacquer bowl filled with broth-drenched rice and topped with Japanese clams). Those looking for a light coffee break during a packed trip should visit Sidewalk Stand, which has become famous for their tasty espressos, hot sandwiches, and craft beers. Discover more premier dining experiences bursting with international flavours and take your tastebuds on a global adventure.
