Choosing your airport in Tokyo
If you plan to arrive or depart from Tokyo in the early hours, Haneda Airport may present a more convenient option. Located only about 30 minutes from downtown Tokyo, Haneda simplifies travel for those scheduled for early flights or arriving late at night. Visitors staying in central Tokyo will appreciate the reduced travel time, allowing for more restful sleep before their journey.
For those visiting during peak seasons, particularly in Spring and Autumn, Narita Airport can provide a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere upon arrival or departure. During these busy periods, such as cherry blossom season in April or the stunning autumn foliage in November, Haneda Airport tends to attract larger crowds. As a result, visitors arriving at Narita may find shorter lines at check-in, security, and immigration, creating a more pleasant travel experience.
Located 70 km northeast of the city, taxis are the most convenient way to reach the city centre from Narita International Airport, as it takes approximately 40 minutes. Another option is to take a train on the Keisei Narita Sky Access line, which provides a picturesque one-hour journey from the airport to Nihonbashi Station in the central Chuo City district. This route allows you to enjoy the scenic views along the way. If you prefer a faster public transport option, the Skyliner service is also available. It can transport you to central Tokyo in as little as 45 minutes, providing a swift and efficient travel experience.
For Haneda Airport, the quickest way downtown is by taxi, which takes only 15 minutes. Alternatively, the Keikyū Airport Line trains arrive at all airport terminals and arrive in the heart of the city in around 40 minutes. Many local buses are also available and will take you to various areas in and around the city centre in about 20 minutes.
The Tokyo Skytree is an essential starting point for any Tokyo exploration. This architectural marvel offers two distinct, yet equally breathtaking observation experiences. Your visit begins on the Tembo Deck at 350 metres. This main access point provides an expansive, 360-degree panorama, perfectly illustrating the immense scale of the metropolis, from its dense urban core to the far-off horizons. For the ultimate perspective, an optional extra fee grants access to the Tembo Galleria. This upper section is a truly unique experience—an enclosed, sloping skywalk that ascends along the tower's exterior structure. The continuous climb offers a dynamic change in view, making the ascent an experience in itself. The skywalk culminates at Sorakara Point, the tower's absolute highest publicly accessible spot, reaching a staggering 451.2 metres. From this lofty perch, the city transforms into a vibrant mosaic of streets, cars, and buildings, solidifying the Tokyo Skytree as an unforgettable, must-visit destination.
Escape the city's hustle and bustle for a moment of serenity at the magnificent Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden . This tranquil, expansive sanctuary offers visitors a unique experience, blending three distinct garden styles: traditional Japanese, English landscape, and French formal. Travellers can wander the winding pathways, unwind on the vast lawns, and take in the beauty of the meticulously cared-for ponds, bridges, and classic tea houses. A highlight is the traditional Japanese garden, notable for its interconnected ponds and the beautiful Taiwan Pavilion, a structure built to commemorate Emperor Showa's wedding. Furthermore, the large greenhouse, featuring a diverse collection of tropical and subtropical plants, makes the garden a superb destination for a visit year-round.
The Sakurai Japanese Tea Experience offers a profound exploration of Japanese tea culture, appealing to anyone interested in local traditions. This tea house is devoted to the authentic art of tea, providing a tranquil and inviting environment. Travellers can select from various engaging activities, including guided tastings of premium Japanese teas such as matcha and hojicha, where expert staff share their knowledge of the history and preparation methods. Additionally, visitors can take part in hands-on workshops to perfect the detailed skills of brewing and serving tea. Travellers are encouraged to fully unwind and enjoy their tea, complemented by seasonal Japanese sweets.

Tokyo beckons food enthusiasts with its diverse array of restaurants that offer a fusion of culinary delights from around the globe. Ryoheisushi in Tokyo offers an exceptional and authentic Edomae Sushi experience for both lunch and dinner, focusing on the finest seasonal ingredients, primarily sourced from the local Tokyo coastline. Travellers can choose between standard meals, which include an appetiser, 8-10 pieces of sushi, rolled sushi (makimono), and dessert, or the Omakase Course, a more curated and adventurous selection prepared by the chefs. The restaurant is particularly noted for the intense flavour and texture of its Maguro (tuna) and Uni (sea urchin), and the chef's expertise is evident in the Ankimo (monkfish liver) served with ponzu sauce. A premium selection of sake and other fine Japanese beverages is available to enhance the meal. For those looking for a hearty meal, Kan-Agari in Shinjuku offers an outstanding, traditional Japanese robatayaki experience. The restaurant focuses on grilling seasonal ingredients to create a carefully planned menu in a welcoming environment. Highly recommended dishes include the perfectly grilled Nodoguro (Blackthroat Seaperch), the tender Iberico Pork Pluma, and the rich umami Tsukuyono Donko Shiitake Mushrooms, which are sourced locally and pair wonderfully with the grilled items.
