What is Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)?
Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), also known as Doctors Without Borders, is an independent international humanitarian medical organization founded in France in 1971. Operating in over 75 countries with more than 490 projects, MSF provides medical aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural disasters, and those living in areas with limited access to healthcare. Guided by medical ethics, MSF prioritizes helping those in greatest need, regardless of race, religion, gender, or political affiliation. Their impactful work has been recognized globally, earning them the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999 and the Seoul Peace Prize in 1996.
Why Measles Matters
Measles is a highly contagious and potentially deadly disease, especially dangerous in densely populated and low-resource areas. It primarily affects children under five, causing symptoms such as skin rashes, pneumonia, and developmental delays. In severe cases, complications can be life-threatening. Fortunately, the measles vaccine is affordable and effective for about 85% of vaccinated children. Mass immunization campaigns typically target hundreds or thousands of children at once. However, in many regions where MSF operates, vaccine shortages prevent children from receiving even a single dose.
